                                                          Library Director

The Town of Weare seeks to fill the vacancy left by our Library Director.  He was highly esteemed in the community, exceptionally creative and unbelievably hard-working.

The position requires a Master’s degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university and three (3) years of progressively responsible library administrative experience.   It is a full-time, exempt,  position.  Full time is 40 hours per week as scheduled and includes regular evening meetings and occasional weekend hours.  Dependent upon level of experience and qualifications, the library current salary is up to $52,000 as well as a town benefits package.

  1. Position Description

The director is responsible for running the library.  He or she is the front-line person in creating a welcoming environment for all ages.  We expect the director to be independent yet comfortable working closely with library patrons, the general public, town administrators, and the Library Trustees.

The director exercises considerable judgment in making administrative decisions including personnel, public relations, collection development, budget management and program creation, implementation and supervision.  The director reports to the elected board of Trustees, and provides leadership to part-time staff and volunteers.  The director is the library’s only full-time employee.

The library director serves as the spokesperson for the library to the community and represents the library in interactions with town officials.

  1. Qualifications

Education and experience

  • Master’s degree from an A.L.A.-accredited institution or completion of post-secondary accredited library education approved by the N.H. State Library.
  • A minimum of three years of professional public library experience preferred.
  1. Skills Required
  • Proficiency with computers, library technology, internet and social media.
  • Superior interpersonal and oral and written communication skills.
  • A service-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with library staff, the general public, selectmen and Library Trustees.

Knowledge of management principles and public library administration including budgeting, organization, personnel and public relations.

  • Ability to supervise the library collection development, including the selection and withdrawal of books, periodicals, audio-visual and electronic materials.
  • The ability to multi-task and provide quality customer service.
  1. Specific Duties
  • Maintains and develops library collections and equipment, selecting and maintaining material for all patrons according to the library’s collection development policy.
  • Provides reference and readers’ advisory services to patrons as needed.
  • Creates and directs non-traditional activities for all age and interest groups.
  • Responsible for supervising, delegating, scheduling, evaluating, recruiting and training of staff and volunteers.
  • Supervises maintenance of library building, equipment, furnishings and grounds.
  • Responsible for all library operations in compliance with state and federal laws.
  • Prepares the annual budget in conjunction with the Library Trustees and presents to the Board of Selectmen. Writes grant proposals, handles library correspondence.
  • Controls the expenditure of funds while staying within the confines of the budget.
  • Purchases new equipment, materials and supplies while staying within the confines of the budget.
  • Prepares monthly and annual financial and statistical reports for review by the Library Trustees and prepares annual reports for the Town of Weare and the N.H. State Library.
  • Provides the Trustees with monthly statistics regarding the library. Works with the Trustees to set appropriate goals and objectives within the town and with local and statewide systems.  Helps to develop long- and short-range plans as well as policies and procedures to implement those plans.  Maintains updated policies and procedures.
  • Keeps informed of current developments in library field, legal issues facing libraries and emerging technologies by attending workshops, professional meetings and keeping current on any literature.
  • Responsible for all outreach and public services.
  • Performs other duties as required by the Library Trustees.
